Thoughts on becoming a dad for the second time

My boys: Ryk, Roland and Chad

cropped-gettyimages_96418818.jpgMy wife says that I’m such a typical male for being so competitive about something as natural as pregnancy, and that “No, we definitely aren’t calling him “Chad” if he’s a boy”

Not that I was actually competing with anyone, but she was amazed at how proud of my “swimmers” I was when she fell pregnant. Now of course I know that millions of people fall pregnant every day, and that there are so many unwanted and unplanned pregnancies that it really can’t be that difficult? But in the last couple of months, I’ve read quite a lot about what those tiny little guys need to do to successfully partner up with the egg and let’s be honest – it is a miracle!

I don’t think I’m the only guy that feels like achieving the most natural thing in the world makes my little guys super special. Guys use terms like “slipping one in past the goalie” (was used in an episode of Seinfeld) or “put one in the back of the net” – it’s all about winning! I so enjoyed the graphic of the little sperm with rockets on his back that I decided it would make the perfect Daddy Blogger logo.

I heard a story (who knows if it’s true) about a woman in Germany who gave birth to twins, one black and one white. Apparently she had had sex with two men, 6 hours apart, and each of them had fertilised an egg. Now aside from the various *gross* aspects of this story – imagine how great the second guy must have felt, that his swimmers had beaten a 6 hour advantage to catch up and overtake the other guy’s!

That’s an airpunch moment right there.
